Collectie: Trigger

Trigger is a publication series initiated by FOMU – Fotomuseum Antwerp that provides a space for critical reflection on photography. It brings together voices from across the field — artists, scholars, curators and other practitioners — to question dominant narratives and foreground perspectives that are often overlooked.

Each year, Trigger publishes a thematic book in collaboration with designer/publisher Hans Gremmen from Fw:Books. The starting point for each edition is a guest editor and their ongoing research, which opens up a particular theme or field of inquiry. This theme develops through dialogue and collective research, bringing together different perspectives, practices and forms of knowledge.

Over the years, Trigger has explored a range of questions around photography. These have included the impact and networks of photographic practice; the role of documentary and the question of truth; care and photography; collaborative practices; and the notion of energy in and through photography. Assemblies turned towards the SWANA region, examining how photography and archives mediate histories, communities and forms of collective memory. The forthcoming edition, Ocean, explores the ‘oceanic turn’ in and through photography, bringing photographic practices into dialogue with marine science, ecology, migration, infrastructures and other ways of knowing and relating to the ocean.

The editorial team of Trigger is flexible and changes from year to year, depending on the nature of the guest editorship. We work with different kinds of guest editors, including organisations, individual curators or photographers, researchers and collectives. This allows each edition to develop its own approach, network and editorial perspective while remaining rooted in Trigger’s commitment to critical engagement with photography.

Through its books, Trigger explores photography’s history, contemporary practices and future directions. It looks at the different forces that shape photographic representation and considers photography’s evolving role in shaping culture, knowledge and perception. In doing so, Trigger aims to contribute to a more inclusive, reflective and forward-looking photographic discourse.

The Trigger website provides information about the publication series, its books, contributors and activities. It also serves as an accessible archive of Trigger’s earlier online publishing activities, which formed part of the project before its development into an annual book series.
